If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you are not alone. This painful condition affects about 5 million people in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common and chronic disorder that causes pain, tenderness and other symptoms that can prevent a person from sleeping well at night and functioning normally during the day. Fortunately, chiropractic care provides safe and effective treatment for the pain and discomfort of fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain, often described as a constant dull ache lasting three months or longer. Doctors say pain is widespread when it affects both sides of the body, above and below the waist.
Other symptoms can include sleep disorders, such as fatigue despite adequate rest, restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea. Morning stiffness can also occur.
Patients with FB often experience “fibro fog,” which are cognitive difficulties that make it hard to focus, pay attention and concentrate. Some people with FB experience headaches, depression, or pain and cramping in the lower abdomen. Others suffer from tingling of the extremities, sensitivity to temperature extremes, and sensitivity to bright lights or loud noises. Symptoms may vary between patients or episodes of FB.
FM affects mainly women – 80 to 90 percent of people diagnosed with fibromyalgia are adult females – but men and children can also develop the syndrome.
Fibromyalgia is similar to arthritis in that it causes pain and impairs function in joints and soft tissues in a way that prevents a person from working, going to school or taking care of a family. Fortunately, chiropractic treatments focus on providing therapy to joints and soft tissues affected by FB.
Many patients with FB gain relief through chiropractic care. Spinal adjustments, therapeutic massage and other specific hands-on, deep tissue treatments alleviate chronic muscle and soft tissue pain associated with FB. These treatments help reduce pain, improve mood, reduce the need for dangerous pain killers, and improve the quality of life for some patients struggling with symptoms of fibromyalgia. Gentle exercise as prescribed by our chiropractor can also bring immense relief from FB symptoms, allowing patients to sleep better at night and move more freely during the day. Chiropractic care and other services offered by a chiropractor can help you identify any factors that may trigger FB symptoms, such as poor posture or an uncomfortable work station, and give you nutrition tips to help you eat better. Chiropractic treatment helps reduce pain and improve function in a variety of ways.
